One of Waterford's proudest sons was giving a Mayoral reception last week in recognition of his work promoting and preserving the heritage of the city and its people.

James Doherty was awarded the honour by Mayor Jason Murphy in City Hall and in his welcoming address, Cllr Murphy said it was a "real pleasure" for him to be able to acknowledge Mr Doherty in such a manner.

"It is a real pleasure to see some familiar faces gathered here today for a very special occasion," he said.

"We come together to recognise and celebrate a man whose passion for our city, for its streets, its stories, and its people, has left a lasting mark on Waterford," he added, referring to Mr Doherty.

In highlighting the importance of what Mr Doherty has done for years, in promoting the heritage of his city, Cllr Murphy said: "For many years now, James has been not just a local historian, but a guardian of Waterford’s rich and layered past. His deep knowledge, his infectious enthusiasm, and his endless curiosity have brought our history to life, not just for those of us lucky enough to call this city home, but for visitors from far and wide."

The Mayor said that through his walking tours, Mr Doherty guided countless people through the heart of Waterford's medieval streets, "telling the tales of those who walked them long before us".

"He has painted vivid pictures of our past, from Viking settlers to Norman knights, from shipbuilders to storytellers," he said.

"In every tour, James reminds us that history isn’t something trapped in books or behind glass — it lives in our streets, our buildings, and in the spirit of our people," he added.

He also pointed out that Mr Doherty had also contributed to film and media and offered his expertise to historical documentaries and productions and in doing so ensured that Waterford's story was told with authenticity, depth, and heart.

"His research has helped filmmakers capture the essence of our city’s past, preserving it for future generations in new and engaging ways," said Cllr Murphy.

"James, your work has enriched our understanding of who we are and where we’ve come from," said the Mayor.

"You’ve helped foster a sense of pride in our heritage, and for that, this city owes you a debt of gratitude," he added.

"On behalf of the people of Waterford, I am honoured to host this reception in your name. May it serve as a small token of the enormous appreciation we hold for all that you’ve done, and continue to do, for our city."
