The inquest was heard at Waterford Courthouse.

An inquest was held at Waterford Coroner's Court into the tragic death of a child.

Waterford County Coroner John P. Goff opened proceedings into the death of the toddler, who lived in Waterford. The child's parents were in attendance.

The court heard how on a date last year, the little girl was playing in her sitting room with her twin sister. The girl's mother was constantly checking in on the children as she went about the housework. At one point she saw her daughter standing on the couch and seemingly looking out the window.

Upon closer inspection, she saw that her little girl was 'tangled' up in the blinds. The mother called the emergency services and tried desperately to get the child free from the cord of the blinds. The child was brought to University Hospital Waterford (UHW), where she was later pronounced dead.

Consultant Pathologist Dr Eimear Lee spoke about the post-mortem that was carried out at Children's Health Ireland (CHI) Crumlin, the largest paediatric hospital in the country. The post-mortem report stated that the child had died from asphyxiation by accidental strangling by a curtain cord.

Mr Goff said: "You can't mind children, with all the best will in the world. My deepest condolences on the tragic loss of your daughter."

The parents accepted the condolences and asked no questions, but said that the tragedy occurred only weeks away from the child's second birthday.
