An injured walker was rescued very quickly last Sunday as emergency crews happened to be doing training exercises in the area when the call came in.
South Eastern Mountain Rescue (SEMRA) received a call from An Garda Síochána at approximately 2pm informing them that there was an injured walker above the Sgilloge lakes in the Comeraghs.
The walker had a lower leg injury and needed assistance.
Luckily, A SEMRA team member and a trainee happened to be in the area, only ten minutes away from the injured walker.
As luck would have it, Rescue 117 was also on a training exercise over the Comeraghs at the same time.
Two paramedics were dropped to the scene from the helicopter to treat the casualty and provide pain relief, before being winched back up to the helicopter for transfer to hospital.
A statement posted to social media by SEMRA reads, "We hope the recovery is as fast as the rescue. This was our first call out with the new Coast Guard AW189 helicopter. It was also a baptism of fire for our trainee."
