Five seats in the Dungarvan electoral area went to incumbent councillors, the final seat however was won by Independent newcomer Joe O’Riordan, one of the eight Independents elected across city and county.
Joe was elected on the twelfth count in Dungarvan following a close race with longstanding councillor Seamus O’Donnell who has lost his seat.
He received significant tally votes from count centres at St. Mary’s Primary School in Dungarvan and Scoil Mhuire, Abbeyside. 627 first preference votes went his way.
Following election, Joe commented, “Thanks everyone who supported me, to all those who canvassed for me, to those who voted for me, to my fellow candidates, to the people of Dungarvan/Abbeyside and the entire area, a sincere thank you.
“103 years ago my grandfather was languishing in a British internment camp because of his commitment to Irish independence. It’s because of men like him that we are able to hold our own free elections. I am delighted to honour his memory by taking part in our democratic process and proud to be elected.
“I will work so hard for the people of this area, you can be sure."
Joe is known for a number of significant sporting posts he held prior to running for election.
He is a former player and member of Abbeyside/Ballinacourty GAA club for 30 years and has been Manager of Waterford Minor Ladies Football Team as well as Vice Chairperson of Waterford Ladies Gaelic Football Club.
Joe cites the local property tax as an issue he is keen to fight, along with anti-social behaviour in the locality.
He believes surrendering beauty spots to camper van parking is ‘misguided and ill founded' and he is in favour of a new counselling service funded by the local authority. He also wants to see the completion of a disability and access survey in regards to the state of footpaths and byways in the area.
