At a recent meeting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council, Councillor Donnchadh Mulcahy asked the council how many maintenance calls the council received in 2025 compared to the previous two years.

He asked the council if they were “equipped to deal with the issues coming in the door.”

Senior Architect for Waterford City and County Council, Walter Holden told the council that up to the end of November “At the moment in the Dungarvan-Lismore area, we’re at 1998 calls to be exact. That is already an increase on previous years. If we look at the overall county, there is an increase each year.

“Our housing stock is increasing each year; however, we are bringing people in through an apprenticeship program. Winter is our busiest time with housing maintenance as you can imagine. Do bear with us as we try to deliver maintenance calls to emergencies first.

Cllr Mulcahy responded: “As someone who has just after coming through an apprenticeship I truly can understand that for a couple of years that apprentice will be getting his hand held. If there’s any way we can get more pressure put on the skilled people on the maintenance team because the number of 1,998 is a lot of calls for a team to be dealing with.”

One councillor joked that he knew a plumber who could help, referring to Cllr Mulcahy’s recent qualification as a plumber, to which Cllr Mulcahy as well as members of the Council Executive gave a hearty laugh.
