HSE gives €50 million towards completion of UHW Surgical Hub
The hub will provide for four operating theatres and two minor procedure rooms
The HSE announced it will allocate €52.6 million to complete the development of University Hospital Waterford’s (UHW) Surgical Hub.
Under the HSE’s 2026 Health Capital Plan released on February 24, a further €2.1m was allocated to progress other health projects across Waterford.
The HSE’s capital plan commits to spending €1.34 billion nationwide in 2026.
Construction began on the surgical hub in 2024, with the hub designed for planned, non-emergency surgeries across the South East.
“This is one of the largest allocations of funding for a health project in the entire country under the Health Capital Plan for 2026,” said Waterford Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State with responsibility for Mental Health Mary Butler.
“It will be a state-of-the-art facility for the entire South East region which will include four Operating Theatres & two Minor Procedure Rooms.
“This transformative development also includes a recovery/post anaesthetic unit and associated support services/staff facilities.
“The Surgical Hub is progressing and expects to welcome its first patients before year end.”
A further €1.3m was earmarked to improve the UHW laboratory, while €140k is being put towards planning for a new acute mental centre at UHW.
The new centre plans to hold 60 beds, with an additional ten beds dedicated to the treatment of individuals 65 years or older.
The remainder of HSE funding will be put towards investment in St. Otteran’s Children's Therapy facility, Dungarvan Community Hospital, and a new Ambulance Base for Waterford.
