Chautidze stole over €2,000 worth in ink cartridges and razor blades from Tesco.

A 45-year-old man has been jailed for stealing €2,468 worth of ink cartridges and razor blades from Tesco Lisduggan.

Zaza Chautidze, of no fixed abode, stole the items earlier this year on April 1 alongside another man, hiding the stolen goods in their jackets.

The Georgian national has stolen similar items in Roscommon, Galway and Laois.

At Waterford District Court, Judge Miriam Walsh heard that Chautidze has eight previous convictions relating to theft contrary to Section 8 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act in other jurisdictions, including Tuam and Laois.

Judge Walsh said to the defendant: "I don't understand how you feel you can go around stealing. I would say to you Sir; how dare you?"

Polysubstance misuse

Solicitor Ken Cunningham told Judge Walsh that his client arrived in Ireland in March 2025 and has struggled with 'polysubstance misuse'.

Mr Cunningham said that Chautidze was a medical student for three years but his life took a turn for the worse after a serious car accident. Chautidze told Judge Walsh that he studied medicine in Moscow and that he was currently on 50ml of methadone, down from 70ml.

Judge Walsh imposed a sentence of five months, backdated from the date he was taken into custody.

Judge Walsh said: "This is not like one of the shops he goes in and out of, he's not getting a discount. Get yourself a job."
