How and when to view the historic Sustainable Transport Bridge lifting and installation

With the arrival of the impressive Hebo 9 floating sheerleg crane and the four spans of the Sustainable Transport Bridge to Waterford, the much anticipated lifting and placing of the bridge will commence this week.
The lifting of the spans is a detailed and precise manoeuvre, described by Waterford Council as ‘a construction operation without precedent in Waterford.’
The Hebo 9 sheerleg crane will lift each bridge section from its barge at Frank Cassin Wharf and transport it upstream to its installation position at the bridge.
The four lifts will be carried out over four days.
The two larger spans will be lifted on Wednesday May 21 and Thursday May 22. Both of these sections are 65 metres in length.
On Friday May 23 and Saturday May 24, the North Approach span and the South Approach span, both 35 metres in length, will be lifted.
The installation operations on the river are dictated by tides and therefore are subject to change.
For members of the public eager to watch history unfold on the riverside, the best public vantage point is William Vincent Wallace Plaza, directly overlooking the River Suir and bridge alignment.
This location is safe, central, and accessible, with clear views of barge movements, crane lifts, and installation activities.
Waterford City and County Council are advising the public to enjoy watching from a safe distance.
A spokesperson said: “Installation is not a single big lift. It will take four days to complete so there are plenty of opportunities to view the process. Please do not enter active work zones, wharves, or construction areas.”
The Council also said that only designated, approved drone operators are permitted to fly in this zone during the Sustainable Transport Bridge installation window.
