The Waterford Council of Trade Unions is organising a housing protest this Saturday, November 1.

The protest will take place in John Robert’s Square at 2 pm.

In a Facebook post, Waterford Council of Trade Unions said: 'An action and people powered campaign, similar to the housing campaigns of the 70s, are necessary to force the government to take back responsibility for housing, via the state building affordable and social housing on publically owned lands, as was done in the past. Larchville, Lisduggan and other local authority housing estates emerged from past housing action campaigns.'

The details of the protest were launched by WCTU, SETU Students Union members, SIPTU, UNITE , and CATU.

This comes at a time when Irish house prices rose at an annualised rate of 7.4 per cent in August, unchanged from the previous month, while the average price paid for a home was €423,000, the latest official figures show.

There are currently 119 known homeless people in Waterford, there were 73 in 2020.
