'Horrendous' derelict buildings in the city
The Showboat.
At a recent meeting, the state of the area around O'Connell Street was described as 'horrendous' by a local councillor.
Councillor Frank Quinlan (Fine Gael) spoke on the Thomas Street, O'Connell Street and Penrose Lane areas, which have a high number of derelict buildings.
He said: "Penrose Lane direction to The Showboat, all the buildings on O'Connell Street; they're all derelict. There's trees growing out of the upper floors of them. Can we do something to engage with the people who own these? Are these people actually paying rates on these buildings that are so dilapidated, they're horrendous looking, its really bringing down the whole area."

Cllr Quinlan praised Waterford Walls for their contribution to improving the look of the derelict buildings: "Only for Waterford Walls painting lovely murals on these walls, it's just absolutely horrendous."
"Something needs to be done in that area the city to try and bring it back in and make it more vibrant and just to clean it up a bit."

A member of the Executive responded: "With regards to the Showboat, that's on our derelict sites register and we're engaging with the owner.
"In regards to the wider area, O'Connell Street, Penrose Lane, if there's any particular building on that street that you're aware of that requires further investigation, pass it along, we'll investigate accordingly."
