A homeless refugee who was bleeding stole clothing from a shop, Waterford District Court has been told.

The man who cannot be named for legal reasons was charged with the theft of €80 worth of goods from a store in Waterford.

Sergeant Michael Hickey told the court that on the date of the incident, gardaí were called to the premises by security.

They reported that the man entered the shop, took the security tags off the items and put them in a bag. Gardai stopped the man outside and arrested him.

The man had no previous convictions.

The solicitor acting for the defendant said that his client had been homeless, with a medical condition and had been bleeding.

At the time, he was not in receipt of any state assistance, but has since been given accommodation and a medical card.

Judge John Cheatle fined the man €100 and gave him five months to pay.
