High Temperature warning extended for Waterford and nationwide

Met Éireann has extended its high temperature warning nationwide until 9am on Saturday morning

Met Éireann has extended its high temperature warning nationwide until 9am on Saturday morning, with very warm and humid conditions expected to continue over the coming days.

Daytime temperatures are expected to remain well above normal for June, with today (Thursday) and tomorrow likely to be the warmest days.

Night-time temperatures are also expected to remain mild, which may make conditions uncomfortable, particularly for vulnerable people.

The public is advised to take sensible heat-related precautions: Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids; Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day; Use appropriate sun protection, including sunscreen, hats and light clothing; Spend time in the shade where possible; Keep indoor spaces as cool as possible; Check in on older neighbours, vulnerable family members, young children, and those with underlying health conditions and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.

A spokesperson for Waterford City & County Council, which issued the warning on behalf of Met Éireann, said there is also a risk of thunderstorms as the hot weather begins to break down.

Current forecast models suggest that the greatest thunderstorm risk is likely to be across the northern and western half of the country, particularly parts of Connacht and Ulster. "However, thunderstorms can be highly localised and difficult to predict, so people in all areas should remain vigilant and continue to monitor Met Éireann forecasts and warnings," said the spokesperson.

Any thunderstorms that do develop may bring intense rainfall or hail over a short period, dangerous lightning, gusty winds, hazardous driving conditions, and localised surface water flooding.

If thunderstorms or heavy rain occur the public is advised to: Stop outdoor sports and activities if lightning develops; Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and never drive, walk or cycle through floodwater.

If a road is flooded, turn around and use another route and the public should also be aware that flash flooding can happen quickly and with little warning.

"Waterford City and County Council is advising the public to stay weather aware, follow updates from Met Éireann, and take appropriate precautions as conditions may change quickly," said the spokesperson.
