Waterford Youth Arts and Garter Lane Arts Centre pair up for new play

From September 10 to September 12, Waterford Youth Arts brings 'Revenge at Hotel Rapscallion', their new murder mystery with a twist, to Garter Lane Arts Centre. 

The play is a premiere, performed by the group's senior drama group aged 15 to 19 who have been in rehearsal since the beginning of August.

Described as a fusion between Agatha Christie's 'And Then There Were None' and Scooby Doo, the play tells the story of a transition year class reluctantly putting on a murder mystery play. 

Fact and fiction blur, tensions rise, and with murderers on the loose the play descends into chaos, in ways that begin to parallel the characters they're playing.

The project also heralds the return of Waterford Youth Arts' frequent collaborator Liam Meagher to direct. 

“I directed the first summer play in 1990 and have directed many projects over the years, it's great to be back" he said

"The young people are fantastic, they bring so much to this project. A lot of their ideas are making it into the script, so it's going really well."

The play is written by Mary O'Donoghue, an alumna of Waterford Youth Arts' summer project and creative writing workshops. It marks Mary’s first work to be staged in a professional theatre. 

“It's a huge honour for me to have this opportunity, it's all very full circle and I'm grateful for the trust both the young people and the organisation have put in me" she said.

"I can't wait to see what they do with the performance” 

Revenge at Hotel Rapscallion runs September 10, 11 and 12 at 8pm at Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford.
