Waterford libraries invite public to ‘take a closer look’ on national open day

Waterford Libraries will throw open their doors for a series of special events this month as part of National Public Libraries Open Day 2026.

The initiative, which takes place on Saturday, September 26, will see libraries across Ireland encourage people to "Take a Closer Look" at the range of free services available through the public library network.

To mark the occasion, Waterford Libraries will host a number of events, including a magic show in Ardkeen Library and a Giant Doodle activity in Central Library. Ardkeen Library will also host a Book Party for adults, with booking advised on 051 849755.

The nationwide campaign aims to highlight the evolving role of public libraries as centres for learning, creativity, wellbeing and community connection.

While books remain at the heart of the service, libraries also provide free access to eBooks, eAudiobooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines and online learning courses. Visitors can also avail of printing facilities, study areas, creative spaces and an extensive programme of events throughout the year.

Waterford City and County Librarian Mary Conway said libraries play an important role in helping people connect with their communities.

"At Waterford Libraries we see every day how libraries are community spaces where people connect, form friendships and feel part of something bigger," she said.

Ms Conway said the library service is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone, from young children attending story times to students, jobseekers, retirees and members of local community groups.

"We warmly welcome everyone visiting us on Public Libraries Open Day and at any time to explore all that Waterford Libraries has to offer," she added.

According to the organisers, public libraries continue to expand their services to support lifelong learning, digital inclusion and accessibility, while providing welcoming spaces for people of all ages and abilities, including those who are neurodiverse.

Stuart Hamilton, Head of Libraries Development at the Local Government Management Agency, said libraries have become vibrant community hubs that offer far more than traditional book lending services.
