A new open air music series has been launched in Waterford City under the title of 'Block Party'.

The initiative was launched by Bank Lane and will be aimed at promoting and celebrating original music across 11 Saturdays through the summer.

A spokesperson for Bank Lane said this summer the well-known venue will transform the heart of Waterford City into a dedicated open-air music venue through the launch of Block Party.

"It's a new free outdoor music series celebrating original music, music discovery and grassroots music culture," said one of those behind the initiative.

"Running across 11 Saturday evenings throughout the summer, the series will showcase a carefully curated mix of established independent artists, breakthrough acts and emerging talent from Ireland and beyond, alongside local support artists, creating a unique opportunity for audiences to experience original music in an accessible outdoor setting," he said.

The inaugural Block Party line-up will feature some very well-known acts including: Ispíní na hÉireann; Maicín; Scustin; Smithereens; Ukulele Death Squad (UK); The Deadlians; Under Starling; SX2 and 3rd Degree.

They will perform alongside a range of local support artists from Waterford and the wider south east region.

The spokesperson said there will be something of interest for all discerning music fans.

"Spanning indie, alternative, folk, trad, hip-hop and contemporary music, the series has been curated to encourage music discovery while showcasing some of the most exciting artists currently emerging across Ireland," he said.

For the duration of the series, the space outside Bank Lane will be transformed into a dedicated outdoor performance area complete with staging, production, lighting and weekly live programming, creating a unique city-centre destination for live music throughout the summer months.
