The public will get the opportunity to pedal the Waterford Greenway this month for a very worthy cause.
The annual Greenway Leisure Cycle will take place on Sunday, May 18, and it will offer people a great opportunity to cycle the length of the greenway but in a relaxed way and at their own pace.
The annual event offers people the chance to dust of their bikes, soak up the scenery and support a cause that’s close to the hearts of many people across County Waterford.
Jointly organised by the Waterford Lions Club and the Dungarvan Lions Club, a spokesperson for the organisers pointed out that the event is not a race and is in fact far from being a competitive event.
"It’s a gathering of neighbours, friends, families, and workmates taking to the Greenway in aid of Waterford Hospice, whose palliative care services have touched countless lives throughout the region," said the spokesperson.
Participants will have the option of starting from either Clonea Strand, near Dungarvan, or the SETU Greenway car park in Waterford City, with cyclists setting off between 9.30am and 10.30am. Both routes wind their way along the Waterford Greenway, meeting midway at the Rainbow Community Hall in Kilmacthomas - where participants will be able to take a well-earned breather over tea, coffee and sandwiches, and enjoy the company of others who’ve turned out for the same good reason.
"It’s a simple idea, but a powerful one," said the spokesperson.
"Over the years, this event has raised over €100,000 for Waterford Hospice, and every euro collected this year will go straight back into the vital care they provide here in Waterford," he added.
"The beauty of it is, anyone can take part. Whether you’re seven or 70, on a high-spec road bike or a trusty hybrid with a basket, you’re welcome. E-bikes, families, and casual cyclists are all encouraged."
Sponsorship cards are available in advance from Advance Physio in the Cove Centre on the Dunmore Road, or people can register and contribute on the morning. Those aged under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. For further details please contact Denis Kennedy on 086 - 3735407 or email: denisKennedy16@gmail.com.
