Waterford City and County Council (WCCC) revealed plans for the creation of a water activity centre in Tramore.
At the September meeting of the Metropolitan Council, the executive went over the ongoing plans for centre.
The new facility will be a collaboration between WCCC and Fáilte Ireland, and will be located at the Lower Promenade of the town. It's hoped the centre will boost tourism in the South East and to further put Tramore on the map for water-based sports and activities.
According to WCCC: "In order to be recognised internationally as a best-in-class activity destination, it is crucial that Tramore invests in compelling activity infrastructure, improving both local and visitor experiences and building on the capacity of local activity providers to ensure the Irish experience meets and exceeds international user expectations."
The complex will also have showering and changing facilities and the plans make provision for: the proposed development of an extension/addition to the public toilets at the Lower Promenade to accommodate a Water Activity Centre facility.
The facility will be comprised of public access changing facilities, five individual shower cubicles, accessible changing places, shower, and toilet facility, beach wheelchair storage, plant room - utilising sustainable technologies - and revision of public footpath layout.
The centre proposal has completed its public consultation phase, where it received multiple supportive submissions.
According to the WCCC: "The capital projects team have assessed the impacts of the proposed development following a thorough analysis of the heritage, economic, technological, cultural and public aspects which affect the project."
The members were told that subject to the Chief Executive’s Report on the development, it was the Capital Project Team’s recommendation to proceed with the scheme as proposed.
