More than 60 members of An Garda Síochána have taken part in training to deal with large crowd violent disorder incidents in Waterford.
The training took place in September and focused on garda response to stadium-based situations.
In a post on social media, Superintendent of the Eastern Region Public Order Unit John Fitzgerald said the training undertaken by gardaí strengthens the force's response to serious incidents.
“This training ran for two days and involved over 60 members of An Garda Siochana being deployed with short shields in around the stadium and practicing for any issues that could arise,” said Superintendent Fitzgerald.
Also in September, over 100 gardaí took part in training for public order incidents on ferries at Rosslare Europort.
The superintendent said Rosslare is a “major gateway to Europe” and so training to protect the port is essential.
“This training has been identified to ensure An Garda Siochana are suitably equipped to respond to serious public order incidents if one should occur on a ferry,” said Superintendent Fitzgerald.
In their post, An Garda Siochana Waterford said: “All Public Order Unit members are frontline policing members who volunteer for this demanding duty and undergo continuous training to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and public safety.”
