Waterford Fire Service opened its doors to the public recently in a very successful event that also included members of the other emergency services.
The event took place at the main fire station in Waterford City and it drew a large number of people consistently throughout the day.

Speaking to Waterford News & Star about the event Waterford Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Tony Murphy, said there was steady footfall in and out of the station all day which delighted everyone in attendance.
"It was good to see so many people coming in and out and it's good to get the chance to show the public what it's like in the station," said Tony.
He also said those attending got to see the fire tenders up close and that proved very popular with a lot of the children who visited.

They also got to speak to members of the other emergency service personnel at the event, which took place from 2pm to 5pm.
Each of the emergency services brings along one of their appliances and that was something that also proved very popular with those in attendance.
"It's good for us to be able to open up to the community and it gives people an idea of what goes on inside the station," said Tony.

Tony also said the fire service is currently recruiting retained fire fighters through its open recruitment process.
In addition, he also said there is an open competition for fulltime firefighters.
More information on both of those processes are available on the Waterford City & County Council website.

According to a report presented to the members of the local authority at their last monthly meeting, in July, the total number of call outs from the 10 fire stations across the county, for the year up to July, was 257.
Of those 87 were classified as 'false alarms/good intent'.

The total number of call outs for the fire service personnel for June was 30.
The figures were contained in the monthly report from Waterford City & County Council Chief Executive, Sean McKeown.

In addition throughout the year up to July, the fire service had received 48 applications for fire certificates.
That figure was slightly down on the number of applications (64) for the same period in 2024.
