A very special event will take place in GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) in Waterford on Thursday, May 22, at 1.30pm.

'From Field to Fibre' will be a workshop focussing attention on exploring Irish grassland habitats through the process of natural paper-making.

The public is invited to join artist, Seamus O'Brien and Biodiversity Officer, Marina Mulligan, to find out about our native grasslands and explore an ancient craft that can be traced back centuries.

The event is being organised as part of Biodiversity Week and it will be a hands-on workshop through which people will be able to connect with the local landscape using foraged wild grasses, guided by expert eyes.

Those in attendance at the workshop will be lead through the process of transforming humble plants into unique sheets of paper complete with naturally textured surfaces.

The workshop will focus attention on fibre preparation, pulping, sheet forming and pressing.

The organisers of the event said participants will also get to enjoy the natural beauty "and peaceful atmosphere" of the process.

"Take the opportunity to slow down, engage with nature and create something beautiful and sustainable with your own hands," they said.

While the event gets under way at 1.30pm there will be a short break and then a workshop from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
