Estate in Dungarvan may see the light soon
"Childers estate is costing us something in the region of €300,000 to solve," Gabriel Hynes told the meeting.
Lighting issues were raised again at this month’s Dungarvan-Lismore district council meeting, with Cllr. Thomas Phelan raising the issue of lights not working in multiple areas, including Ballinroad and Childers Estate.
He said certain lights had been out of action "for long periods of time".
Cllr Niamh O’Donovan, who is also Cathaoirleach, raised issues of lighting in Grattan Square, Dungarvan, Cappoquin and Childers estate.
Gabriel Hynes, Director of Services in Waterford City and County Council, with responsibility for Roads, Water and Environment, responded to concerns from councillors around lighting in Dungarvan.
He confirmed that a contractor was due to start in the next couple of weeks on fixing the lighting issues, however, it seems there will be a long road ahead.
Mr. Hynes told councillors: “There’s roughly 17,000 public lights. We will look at the areas where there’s a deficiency in lighting and we will tackle those. As well as that, we’re tackling the other conditions. Childers estate is costing us something in the region of €300,000 to solve.”
He continued: “I’m not dismissing your issues. I’m saying as the PLEEP [Local Authority Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project] is rolled out, in some cases where the LED lighting is put in, that will increase the intensity. We will get to a stage where we will look at the areas you’ve highlighted.”
