End of an era as Waterford community laments closure of last shop

The closure of the Spar supermarket in Ferrybank has led to much concern locally for the future of the village
The village of Ferrybank on the outskirts of Waterford City is mourning the loss of its last remaining shop, following the recent closure of the Spar supermarket.
The shop opened as 'the L&N' in the 60s and was fondly remembered locally under that name throughout the 60s and 70s.
One local described it as once being "a bustling community hub".
"The store’s shutdown marks a symbolic end to village life as residents knew it," he said.
Following the closure of Walsh’s Lotto Shop, the Spar shop was a daily meeting point, a place for chats and a vital connection for the elderly and those without transport.
"Its closure has left many locals feeling saddened and cut off," said the local.
Many residents have expressed concern over the growing lack of local amenities and the fading sense of community.
“It’s like the heart has been taken out of Ferrybank,” said another long-time local resident.
"While larger supermarkets are accessible by car, the shop's closure is especially difficult for older residents and those without mobility," said another resident.
Calls are now growing for investment in small businesses to help revive the village’s spirit.
