'Embarrassing' - Tramore's public toilet facilities

The state of facilities in Tramore may be having an adverse economic effect on the area.
The state of facilities in Tramore may be having an adverse economic effect on the area. Concern was raised by a local councillor at a recent council meeting.
Councillor Eamon Quinlan (Fianna Fáil) said: "Many local businesses, including some of our seasonal businesses, raised the fact that the public toilets are not just embarrassing, they are now seen as a threat to the local economy. The problems are leading to serious reputational damage. It is putting people off wanting to come to Tramore.
"At the height of the season, the population of the town quadruples and seeing large toilets overflowing, broken, etc, makes people consider alternative locations. Local businesses are paying steep money in commercial rates and the Council not being able to get a handle on this is something we need to remedy."
There were a raft of complaints from both locals and visitors last summer.
Cllr Quinlan said: "In fairness to our staff, a major component to the issue was flushing rubbish, nappies and other items that clogged and, in some cases, straight up broke the pipes. The image of 20 to 25 men’s urinals all backing up and numerous toilets overflowing was simply disgusting. People have plenty of choices in this day and age, as such a grotesque sight does give people pause and certainly damages the local brand."
The Executive stated that they were investing in upgrading facilities.
