'Elite' Waterford football player found with €400 worth of cocaine
Waterford Courthouse.
An “elite” Waterford football player has been ordered to pay €300 to the court poor box after gardaí found him with €400 worth of cocaine.
Anthony Ebhonuaye (20), of 2 Beech Grove, Greenfields, Old Tramore Road, Waterford, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs and possession with the intent to sell or supply at Waterford District Court.
Sergeant Michael Hickey told the court that on March 6, 2025, gardaí on patrol stopped the defendant's vehicle and on searching it they found €400 worth of cocaine.
The court was told that the man had one previous conviction for driving while holding a mobile phone.
Acting for the defendant, Ken Cunningham said his client was an “elite soccer player” at a “very well-known club”.
He said his client was pleading guilty to the charge, which was “based on the quantity”, but understands that drugs are not consistent with his current lifestyle.
The solicitor said his client works as a personal trainer and intends to return to college.
Judge John Cheatle ordered the defendant to pay €300 to the court poor box and said that if he did that and did not come to any further negative garda attention, the matter would be struck out.
The matter was put back to March for review.
