A quartet of Dungarvan students have been recognised nationally for developing an innovative car crash simulation project.
At the national Garda Youth Awards, hosted at the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise last week, Dungarvan CBS students Matthew Hayes, Jake Kiely, Archie Mahony and Ben O’Leary, became county Waterford's first ever recipients of a National Garda Youth Award.
In May, the group won the overall award at the county level Garda Youth Awards.
The awards celebrate outstanding young people between 13 and 21 years of age.
This year’s national event acknowledged the remarkable contributions of 25 recipients.
The local students, accompanied by school Principal Agnes Guerin, Deputy Principal Brenda Kirwan, and Dungarvan Juvenile Liaison Officer
Aidan McCarthy, were honoured with the Community Safety Award for their powerful car crash simulation, which raised vital awareness about the dangers of drink driving among young people.
The students identified the issue of drink driving by recognising that many of their peers were preparing for their driver theory test or would soon be driving.
