Waterford City and County Council discussed the standards of signs throughout the area.

Councillors were searching for the signs at the September meeting of Waterford's Metropolitan District Council.

Signage was a pressing issue for many at the meeting, particularly road signs and place notices.

Cllr Joe Conway (Independent) flagged the issue of unauthorised signage on the approach into Tramore.

He said: "Some small improvements have been made but it is still very much a dog's breakfast."

Labour councillor Seamus Ryan broached the subject of signage, saying: "Again Mayor I would like to highlight the condition of road signage in the city, in particular, on the main approach roads to the city.

"I know that there's one, for example, on the Cork Road, and the sign is actually in half. This signage should be updated and improved."

He added: "I would like to ask that the entrance signage and entrance stone to my own estate of Ursuline Court would be examined and upgraded because it's in very poor condition."

Larchville Councillor John Hearne spoke about the Knights Templar Project in Kilbarry.

He said: "The locals have done a great job but for the people arriving there still wasn't a sign saying where it is.

"It just needs a sign on the front of the back lane and on the roundabout after that, and that will look after that."

Presentation

Senior Executive, Dawn Wallace, responded to Cllr Ryan: "In relation to the entrance to Ursuline Court, I'll ask our presentation team to go out and have a look there and see what's happening."

Council engineer Roger Noonan commented: "In regards to road signs, we'll take a look at that and see what necessary works can be done."

Cllr Jim Griffin (Sinn Féin) raised the issue of pedestrian signage on Barrack Street. "That area is going to have 60 continuous buses passing through Barrack Street, with new routes in the near future, it'll be a very busy time there regarding bus routes and safety."

Mr Noonan responded: "For the Barrack Street signage, that is on a list of jobs to do in the next couple of months."

Cllr Mary Roche (Social Democrats) addressed Director of Services Michael Quinn: "Can I ask is it possible that we would rename the Quay to its proper name, like 'Meagher's Quay', 'Grey Quay', actually put on the proper sections of the Quay."

Finally, Cllr Ryan asked about official signage to mark the twinning between Waterford and the Palestinian city of Ramallah: "The signage for recognising the twinning is due to go up, can someone tell me where it's at?"

Council Officer, Honor Dunphy, replied that there were plans underway for signage to include all of Waterford's twin cities.
