At the Piltown Municipal meeting, the issue of a greenway extension was raised yet again.

Ian Gardner, Director of Services for Kilkenny, gave the councillors an update on the South East Greenway. He said works were still ongoing to facilitate access from the greenway onto Abbey Road.

He also said that “the greenway team continue to engage with Waterford City and County Council in relation to a timeline of the completion of these works.”

The remaining section to be completed is between Curraghmore and Ballyverneen.

Mr Gardner gave updates on South East Greenway’s links to various communities along its route.

In relation to the greenway link to Glenmore, he said discussions were ongoing "with relevant parties regarding the acquisitions of land”.

On the greenway link to Slieverue, he said efforts were being made to identify potential funding streams to advance the project.

Finally, on the Woodstock to South East Greenway link, he said "various deliverables" were required to advance the project under the TII project management phase 2.

After these updates, he added, somewhat defeatedly, that there was “still no official opening date”.

Once the contractor of the greenway gives the green light, the South East Greenway should be able to open a week later.

Cllr Pat Dunphy said, “I’d like to have an opening date by our next meeting, that’s all I’ll say.”

He went to tell Mr Gardner to: “Do a Jack Charleton on it, keep the pressure on.”
