Discussions underway to build Irish independence memorial locally

Kilkenny County Council are planning the construction of a memorial which would honour the achievement of Irish independence.

The memorial will be developed in a yet to be identified area of county Kilkenny in honour of those who sacrificed during the struggle for Irish freedom during revolutionary periods such as the 1916 Easter Rising, War of Independence and Civil War.

Representatives involved in the project delivered presentations to municipal districts across county Kilkenny last week, including to councillors in the Piltown Municipal District, who meet monthly in Ferrybank.

Regina Fitzpatrick, Heritage Officer with Kilkenny County Council, said that the memorial would act as a way to honor those who made sacrifices during the revolutionary period, serve as an education tool, would instill a sense of community pride and would contribute to the historical and cultural landscape of Kilkenny.

Although a location is yet to be identified, a stakeholder consultation will be held early next year to develop a brief for potential artists to consider.
