An Bord Pleanála has upheld a decision by Waterford City and County Council to refuse planning permission for an 18-metre telecommunications mast in Crooke Passage East.

In their decision, An Bord Pleanála said the proposed development was not in line with the county development plan or the visual impact section of the Guidelines for Planning Authorities.

"It is considered that the proposed development would be visually obtrusive and would seriously injure the amenities of the area and of property in the vicinity," said An Bord Pleanála.

The board also rejected the developer's justification for the height of the mast and the location it proposed to build it.

Councillor Declan Barry said in a post on social media that this is great news for the community.

"This is a fantastic result for all the people of the area, that opposed this proposal.

"A big thank you to the committee that was formed and for all their hard work and determination.

"And to all the people of the area that attended the public meetings and sent in submissions.

"It shows you that when a community gets together and stands up for what they believe in, then anything and everything is possible.

"I, for one, am very proud, that the correct outcome, has been achieved," said Cllr Barry.

On Tower Ireland Ltd lodged a planning application in November 2024.

Waterford City and County Council refused planning permission in January.

The developer lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanála in February.

That appeal was refused on June 9.
