Critical need for wastewater facilities

Bonmahon is in 'urgent' need of a wastewater plant

Bonmahon is in serious need of wastewater treatment works.

A motion in the name of Cllr Catherine Burke at this week’s Comeragh district meeting, requested that Waterford Council write to Uisce Eireann requesting that the proposed wastewater treatment works in Bonmahon be prioritised for delivery.

Cllr Burke said: “In light of the recent national budget announcement allocating additional funding for water infrastructure projects, Bonmahon should now be advanced as key priority area."

“This request is made with the clear understanding that it should not negatively impact or delay any projects already prioritized within the Comeragh district” she added.

Cllr Burke has been a strong advocate for the vital infrastructure being implemented in her native village of Bonmahon.

A number of months ago she commented on the urgency of the matter during a Comeragh meeting, saying: “The ongoing absence of proper wastewater infrastructure in Bonmahon poses a serious environmental and public health risk particularly during peak tourist seasons.

“The lack of basic services is also a significant barrier to rural development and has contributed to rural decline in the area preventing new housing, new businesses and tourism investment."

“This is urgent" she added.

Her motion this week supported by all of her Comeragh colleagues.

Cllr Liam Brazil commented: “Bonmahon is falling behind big time and it has been on the long finger for a long time."

Cllr Seanie Power added: “I’ve seen firsthand sewage flowing into the waters there and it needs to be prioritised.”

Uisce Eireann criticism

Local councillors across the city and county have consistently been critical of Uisce Eireann for their lack of cooperation and transparency over serious water and wastewater issues the county is facing.

At monthly Council meetings across the county’s electoral areas, elected members have strongly criticised the water body’s inability to respond to the concerns of elected representatives and local residents.
