St. Carthage’s Cathedral in Lismore has submitted a planning permission application to Waterford City and County Council.
The application, for major works, will, if granted, improve the overall accessibility and convenience for churchgoers.
The details of the proposed works to the Cathedral detail the church’s hopes to construct a 5m² single story extension to the rear of the building.
The extension will provide a new accessible bathroom facilities for churchgoers with new pumped sewer connections that will stretch to the land boundary have also been requested.
Works are also set to take place on the cobbled entrance path to the church, to provide accessible access to the cathedral, as well as to the bathroom, which will be located between the existing north transept and the cathedral library.
The planning permission request is also seeking permission to erect a staircase within the Cathedral’s west tower.
That would replace the ladder access it previously had.
Associated site works, which are set to include repairs and alterations to the cobbled entrance path to improve accessibility, have also been requested.
An archaeological assessment was performed in support of the application.
It recommended that proposed drainage works on the west end of the cathedral route will cross a sensitive area.
The assessment suggested that testing be carried out using remote sensing to avoid disturbing material of archaeological interest.
The planning application can be found on the Waterford City and County Council website with the Reference number: 2560145.
