Councillor praises developing housing units in Waterford City but warns of impasse

Development limbo is stalling too many housing units, says local Cllr Frank Quinlan.

The Fine Gael Councillor told the September meeting of the Metropolitan District: "On the Housing Capital Scheme, (there are) 867 units on the go at the moment, but there's one particular development, Summerland Square, where 12 units are due to be built.

"It's been five or six years since the planning application has gone in and still no movement whatsoever on it. It's unacceptable."

The development is believed to have been stalled due to an impasse in negotiations over a parcel of land between the Council and the landowners.

In a housing report from 2023, it was stated that the development was at the tender stage and "negotiations with landowners on-going".

Plans for the development were submitted in 2018, and an architectural analysis said: "Waterford City Development Plan 2013-2019 states that the site is zoned 'Existing Residential'. Existing residential zoning provides to protect, provide and improve existing residential areas and their amenities and provide for appropriate residential infill opportunities where feasible.
