The issue of dog waste being improperly disposed of was raised again at the December sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council meeting.
This issue has been ongoing since the council removed public bins at Clonea in September, claiming that they were being "misused" by the public.
Cllr Thomas Phelan first raised the issue. He asked for the council to consider installing a “big belly, solar-powered compactor bin” at the Clonea strand slipway. He said he had to take away a big bag of dog poo bags from the area the previous week.
Director of Roads, Gabriel Hynes, replied: “The only thing you should leave at the beach is your footprints. So if you have litter, you should bring it home with you.”
He said the council’s policy is that they do not provide bins in Clonea outside of the “bathing season”. Cllr Phelan noted later on in the meeting that bathing season "is year-round now".
However, issues of littering, not to mention pollution, remain.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are enough E.coli bacteria in one dog poo to contaminate an Olympic-size swimming pool.
