Convicted fraudster Catherine O'Brien may not be appearing for her sentencing this week at Waterford Courthouse.

O'Brien, of An Grianan, Ballinroad, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, was found guilty of deception after a three week trial in July 2025. She was charged with dishonestly by deception inducing a man to giving her €20,000 to purchase a horse, €1,100 for insurance and €984 to transport the horse from France to Ireland.

The jury heard that the victim had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and suffered a stroke.

After the jury returned their verdicts, O'Brien was remanded in custody at Limerick Prison, where she currently resides. She is due to be sentenced on Wednesday, November 5, via video link.

The 48-year-old is now said to be entering a "rehab centre" for a medical issue related to her back. Judge Eugene O'Kelly said: "I would not be happy with her being sentenced without video link."
