Concerns raised over halting site in Dungarvan spoiling 'signature' walking route

Dawn Wallace, Senior Executive Officer with Waterford Council’s Environment Department, said the issue of dumping in the Shandon area of Dungarvan is being investigated.

At this week’s meeting of the Dungarvan/Lismore municipal district, Cllr Damien Geoghegan said that ongoing issues in the Shandon area of the town are spoiling one of Dungarvan’s signature walking routes.

Cllr Geoghegan said that dumping and horse waste is having an adverse impact on "one of the nicest walks in Dungarvan", which travels along the River Colligan from the Park Hotel roundabout to Ballyneety Bridge.

He said: “There are issues there regarding the halting site. There are issues regarding rubbish being dumped into the river and there are issues with regards horses being tied up on the footpaths there and all of the waste that produces.

"People are complaining about it and rightly complaining about it.

“We’re here talking about how we can deal with dog owners who don’t clean up after themselves, well out there there’s an issue with horse owners not cleaning up after themselves. This is spoiling what I would term one of the nicest walks in Dungarvan."

Dawn Wallace, Senior Executive Officer with Waterford Council’s Environment Department, said the issue of dumping in the area is being investigated.

“The dumping issue you’ve alluded to, we are connecting with Housing to look at how we can find a long-term solution to dumping in the estuary because it is really unsightly."
