Issues for pedestrians on Grattan Square in Dungarvan were raised yet again at a recent council meeting.

The signage, lighting and footpaths were criticised by multiple councillors at the meeting.

In previous meetings, the square has been criticised for its poor visibility at night. Waterford City and County Council have maintained that the square “is a shared space” for both motorists and pedestrians.

Independent Councillor Joe O’Riordan said that in some places on the square, the “square merges with the curb”; he explained that this creates “an illusion” where even he himself has tripped on the curb a few times. Cllr O’Riordan said that “it's happened where children have fallen out of buggies.”

Cllr O’Riordan said that the black and white painting that signal a pedestrian crossing should be “far more vivid”.

Cllr O’Riordan went on to say that the dimples in the crossing are “actually off the footpath”, and that they should start on the footpath because, “if someone with a walking stick is coming along, they won’t find the dimples unless they know the turn is to the right, which is unlikely”.
