Graveyard in Waterford sinking into adjacent field
Whitechurch graveyard in West Waterford.
Independent Councillor Joe O’Riordan told Waterford City and County Council at a recent meeting of the Dungarvan-Lismore district that the graveyard in Whitechurch “has sunk into a state of deep disrepair".
The historic graveyard contains one Commonwealth burial from the First World War.
The graveyard is “totally inaccessible”. Although there have not been any recent burials in the graveyard, it's “quite upsetting” for people who have family members buried there.
Cllr O’Riordan said he had a family member buried there and it's “impossible” to visit their grave.
He said, “It's actually collapsing into the next field. You can actually see the outline of a grave [in the field].”
Cllr O’Riordan suggested a Community Employment scheme could clear the graveyard and make it accessible again.
Council Senior Executive Officer Dawn Wallace replied, “My short answer is I don’t know.”
She said she would refer it to the relevant department.
