Car parked on Waterford street for six years – Council say it's not abandoned
The car in question.
At a recent meeting of the Metropolitan District Council, Fine Gael's Cllr Frank Quinlan told the council that, whilst he has “successfully logged” many abandoned cars over the years, one car in a residential area in Waterford has not been removed by Waterford City and County Council.
He said, “I was told the car was parked, but it was actually abandoned. It hasn’t been taxed or insured or NCT’d for five years.”
He continued, “It’s taking up a valuable car park space on a cul-de-sac where car park space is at a premium and it's causing residents a lot of upset.”
According to the council website, an abandoned vehicle is an offence under the Waste Management Act 1996.
A council executive replied: “Abandoned vehicles are left by the owner, the scenario you’re talking about, the vehicle is outside someone’s house. No law says you can only be parked for a certain amount of time. Whether it's taxed or insured is not something we use as a criteria.”
