The car park in question

At a recent meeting of the Metropolitan district council, Social Democrat Councillor Mary Roche told the council that a car park in Waterford was being used as a viewing point for boy racers.

She said the car park on the Cork Road for JYSK furniture shop is open 24/7.

“It's been used as a viewing point for cars tearing up and down the Cork Road, revving engines. It's causing a lot of nuisance for residents on the Cork Road estates who are coming to me.”

Cllr Roche said that she wrote to the owners in 2023 but “to no avail.” She said at that time, the car park was owned by MMN Ltd with an address at Boland's on the Cork Road in Waterford City.

She asked if somebody from the council could “make contact.”

Cllr Roche suggested that a possible solution could be to follow Woodies' lead by closing the car park in the evening.

“It’s causing a lot of upset,” she said.

Metropolitan Mayor Cllr Adam Wyse was quick to correct Cllr Roche by saying, “There are female racers, not just boy racers.”

Senior Engineering Executive for Waterford City and County Council, Paul Flynn, answered that because the car park is in private ownership, “we will reach out with them with regards to closing time.”
