The Gardaí don't ordinarily offer members of the public financial advice, especially those who drive while disqualified.

However, some members of the force branched out yesterday to offer one wayward motorist who just bought a Toyota Prius for €1,000 advice on how they may have been advised to spend their money.

In an online post the Gardaí in the Laois and Offaly area highlighted how they stopped a motorist in Laois who had earlier that day paid €1,000 for a Toyota Prius.

However, the Gardaí caught him an hour later driving disqualified and with a live bench warrant in place. The driver was subsequently arrested and the vehicle was seized.

'We’re no investment bankers, but here’s what €1,000 could also buy you,' noted the Gardaí in their post.

They then outlined that the sum of money paid for the car could have bought: '2,500 Freddo bars (better resale value than this Prius); 500 large cappuccinos (at least you’d stay awake on the bus; Four Electric Picnic tickets (sold-out, unfortunately); A season bus pass (where Disqualified drivers actually belong)'.

'Instead, this €1,000 investment got a court date and no car,' noted the Gardaí.

They said the moral of the story was that 'if you’re disqualified, spending €1,000 on a car is the worst return on an investment you’ll ever see'.
