Calls to review dry meadows amidst fire concerns
There are concerns over potential fire risks
In light of fire concerns during prolonged hot weather spells, a call has been made for the local authority to review the implementation of its meadow management policy in areas located close to homes and residential estates.
Cllr Donal Barry said last week that he supports the Council’s biodiversity policy, however that it should be delivered on a site-by-site basis, taking account of local conditions and potential fire risks.
“Public safety and the protection of life and property must remain the Council's first priority and environmental initiatives should be implemented in a way that does not increase unnecessary risks for residents.” Cllr Barry said.
He further asked the council to review meadow locations and consider measures such as maintaining buffer zones, creating firebreaks where appropriate and carrying out fire risk assessments.
“The aim of the proposal is to strike a balance between protecting biodiversity and ensuring that communities are not exposed to avoidable fire hazards,” Cllr Barry said.
