A Dungarvan councillor has said that there is a serious issue with e-scooters and “boy racers” in the town.

Councillor Joe O’Riordan asked officials at the September sitting of Dungarvan-Lismore District Council to write to gardaí.

He said that a common complaint he is getting is “boy racers” driving around at night.

And that he experienced it this summer while he was very ill.

“At 3am, when you are trying to get a bit of sleep and everything is quiet, this idiot comes flying past your door.

"It’s like a plane taking off, and it’s got to be illegal from a noise pollution point of view,” said Cllr O’Riordan.

Cllr O’Riordan said more needed to be done to tackle e-scooters speeding through the town.

“I don’t know about the legislation on them, but I know it certainly isn’t correct if someone can fly down there at 40km an hour from the shopping centre down onto the square across the traffic, or even going through traffic lights like willy nilly.

"I think we should write to the gardaí to remind them that this is actually happening, said Cllr O’Riordan.

In response, Director of Roads Gabriel Hynes said he is aware of new legislation around e-scooters and that they would speak with the gardaí.

“We will talk to the gardaí to see what might be warranted just to get some information out. I think there might be a deficit there in relation to what they can do with e-scooters and e-bikes.

“We have a road safety meeting coming up soon, and I will bring it up at that meeting,” said Mr Hynes.
