Waterford City and County Council is asking for the public’s help in maintaining historic graveyards.
Director of Roads, Gabriel Hynes, told elected members at the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council that they are happy to support local clean-ups.
He was responding to a query from Councillor Kate O’Mahoney, who asked that the council tidy the famine graveyard in Pulla and provide signage at the monument at the cholera graveyard.
In response, Mr Hynes said: “If we could get some community groups to help with maintenance and grass cutting in those old graveyards, we would certainly welcome that.
“And in relation to signage, I have no difficulty providing that additional signage you are requesting.” Cllr Pat Nugent requested that the council do the first clean-up and the community take over.
He said the area is sparsely populated.
Mr Hynes said he had no difficulty with that.
Cllr Damien Geoghegan pointed out that Tidy Towns and his colleague Cllr Thomas Phelan do great work in the graveyards they care for.
It shows what we can achieve when we work together,” said Cllr Geoghegan.
