The broken fencing on the Ferrybank side of the Rice Bridge has become a familiar sight for Waterford residents since a car collided with the bridge two years ago.

Despite assurances from Waterford City and County Council in August that the repairs to the barriers were "due to be completed in the next four to six weeks", the works have now been postponed until next year. A statement from the Council in August confirmed that a contractor had been appointed to repair the damaged section of the railings on the Ferrybank side of Rice Bridge, and said that the works were "due to be completed in the next four to six weeks".

In the three months since that statement, Waterford News & Star was told that the replacement railings for the damaged sections were being manufactured and galvanised by the contractor, these works have now been postponed until after Christmas "in order to minimise traffic disruption in the run-up to the Christmas season."
