The scheme was first introduced in February and has since been embraced by a number of local bodies.

The recently introduced bottle return scheme has been embraced by various bodies across Waterford, particularly within the local GAA.

Speaking at recent meeting of Waterford Council, Cllr Niamh O’Donovan (FG) commended the GAA for getting involved and suggested ways to further implement the scheme: “I want to acknowledge the GAA for brining in the initiative of the bottle return bin and I’m just wondering could the Council consider rolling it out to the community, charities and schools in west Waterford and across the county. It might be a good way of getting money back into local fundraisers."

Cllr Tom Cronin supported the suggestion, saying: “I would agree with Cllr O’Donovan in connection with recycling bottle banks. They should be put into the GAA and the GAA should welcome them because there is a few bob to made out of it.”

Dawn Wallace, Senior Executive Officer with Waterford City and County Council said that the council have been contacted by various local bodies who are interested in implementing the scheme: “Our environmental awareness officer has had some request across country from various bodies, but from GAA clubs in particular."

Re-Turn, operators of Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme, announced last week that over 400 million plastic bottles and cans have been returned nationally since the scheme launched on February 1, this year.

CEO of Re-turn, Ciaran Foley, said: “It is great to see the public’s support for the Scheme and the volume of drinks containers returned in the first six months rise steadily."
