Beloved local postman Stephen O’Brien has hung up his satchel after 45 years of service.

His retirement marks the end of an era for the community of Waterford, that has come to know him since his arrival to the city in 2000.

Far more than a postman, Stephen became part of the community, and was much respected by those who became familiar with him over the years through his work.

Stephen started his career back in 1980 at Sheriff Street in Dublin, before moving to Waterford in 2000.

He has been delivering post to the Templar’s Hall area for over 10 years.

To commemorate his years of service and officially ring in his retirement, residents from Templars Hall made a presentation to Stephen on Friday, March 28, at the entrance to Templar’s Hall.

Local residents Dejan Cosic, Chris Phelan and Kenny Awoniyi were present on the day for the presentation.

Local of the area and former Waterford councillor, Tom Murphy, thanked Stephen for his years of reliability and kindness on behalf of the residents.

He said: "On behalf of the residents here, we’re sorry you're coming up to your retirement, and we thank you so much for your service over the years.

"You were very much on the ground and on behalf of the people here, we wish you the very best with your retirement, and that things will work out and that your years are plenty.”
