Ballygunner man's appeal over delays and 'ghost' buses

JJ Kavanagh has several routes in Waterford City.

A Waterford man is appealing to JJ Kavanagh for better service, after experiencing a series of delays and 'ghost' buses.

David Flynn is a resident of Ballygunner and relies on the JJ Kavanagh bus service to get from place to place.  He suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which makes walking long distances difficult.

The local bus service enables David to get around town, carry out errands and visit family and friends, especially his mother.

However, over the last few years he has been left frustrated and financially worse off due to his experiences with local transport standards in Waterford.

He told the Waterford News & Star that he has had to resort to taxis in lieu of missed services.

Across Waterford City, there are constant roadworks, along with temporary road closures for the completion of essential works.

Over in Ferrybank, major roadworks and the ongoing North Quays Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) have led to constant congestion and travel delays for Waterford commuters.

JJ Kavanagh were reached for comment on the matter and a spokesperson issued the following statement: "JJ Kavanagh appreciates all feedback from passengers and is working hard locally to combat significant additional congestion on our Ballygunner/ Abbey Park and Ballygunner/ Slieverue services. The closure of Abbey Road during the summer provided the opportunity to trial other options that may allow a more consistent service in Waterford."

It went on: "However, these particular routes, the 607, 617, and 627 are at the mercy of the unpredictable flow of traffic along some of Waterford's congestion hotspots.

"While we endeavor to align with our timetables, we advise passengers to consult our real-time info on our website or our mobile App, where you can book tickets and monitor journeys for all our routes across Ireland."
