Bail denied for man charged with assault causing harm at Waterford property
John Cashman Jnr is charged with assault causing harm.
A man appeared before Carrick-on-Suir District Court on Wednesday, charged with assault causing harm, following an incident in which a man died.
John Cashman Jnr of Rockfield, Cappagh, Co Waterford, was arrested at 6.10pm on Tuesday, April 14, and charged with assault causing harm at a property at Cappagh.
He appeared before Carrick-on-Suir District Court on Wednesday morning.
Detective Garda Martin Keohane from Dungarvan Garda Station gave evidence to the court in opposition to a bail application.
Mr Cashman's solicitor Eamonn Hayes put forward some conditions of bail that Mr Cashman would be willing to accept, such as surrendering his passport, adhering to a curfew and signing on daily in Dungarvan Garda Station.
Mr Cashman’s mother, Gillian Cashman, gave evidence in support of her son. She said her son was “a man of integrity and honesty”.
She told the court that if Mr Cashman was given bail she would be "in support" of him continuing to live on her property.
Mr Cashman addressed the court in support of his application for bail. He referred to the incident, which occurred on Monday evening, as a "scuffle" between him and his father. He maintained that he acted in self-defence.
The court is awaiting a post-mortem on John Cashman Senior.
The application for bail was denied, Judge John O'Leary said, based on the "seriousness of the matter". The accused was remanded in custody.
He is due to appear at the Clonmel District Court next Tuesday, April 21.
