B&Q Ireland has agreed to purchase the Homebase store in Waterford as part of a €3.9mn deal to take over three stores in the country.

The Homebase staff at the store on the Outer Ring Road in the Ardkeen Retail Park, Waterford City, will become employees of B&Q upon the completion of the takeover. Overall, 65 jobs will be transferred to the British multinational DIY and home improvement company across the three stores in Waterford, Letterkenny and Navan.

The deal is expected to take place over the coming year and the full takeover is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, the company said, with B&Q branding expected to be added to the buildings in the coming months.

In a statement, the chief executive of B&Q, Graham Bell said: “We’re delighted to be adding these three stores to our fantastic store network. We’re determined to give home improvers the choice and convenience they deserve, and these locations need a home improvement store that fulfils their need.

“We look forward to swiftly concluding the purchase and converting the stores to the B&Q brand and offer, and to welcoming our new customers to the stores and new colleagues to the B&Q family.”

The deal to take over the new stores comes after provisional liquidators were appointed to Homebase's parent company in November, and fears arose about the jobs in the Ardkeen store.
