Appeals have been issued for a late train service from Dublin to Waterford, as the current last train departs at 6.35pm.

Green Party TD for Waterford, Marc Ó Cathasaigh, has called for the National Transport Authority to demonstrate a commitment to proper regional development with a nationwide transport network that moves away from a Dublin-centric focus.

Speaking at last week’s Public Accounts Committee, he said: “There is life outside the Pale,” emphasising that although national transport systems are generally efficient at getting people to Dublin, they do not address the need for serving regional cities.

He added, “Connectivity is vital for any city to thrive and so it is essential for our regional cities to be very well served for commuters, students, service users and tourists. Pressure on housing and rental costs for students and workers must be taken into account by the National Transport Authority and transport operators when service planning for Dublin and the regions.”

“Waterford and the South East has become a desired location for people to come and live and enjoy a quality of life while remote working. Similarly for people who want to set up business in Waterford. But in order for us to optimise this potential, we need a frequent service to the capital.

"I have been proposing that the last train to Carlow, which leaves Dublin at 20:15 extends the service to serve the people of Kilkenny and the people of Waterford. This will allow the two cities of the South East have good connectivity for workers, students between SETU campuses, service users at the region’s main hospital, or for those going to social events.

“That later train in the evening back from Dublin is important for those putting in a full day’s work in Dublin.

"Equally, for people who have to travel to Dublin for healthcare or for education, a night-time train is of significant benefit.”
